(FILMAFFINITY)

Some films just really click for you, and this one sure did for me. This is just the second feature film of Spike Lee’s, and that unbridled passion unifies the film. His voice is enthralling and overwhelming, and it makes no apologies or compromises for what it is. It’s a feeling, a snapshot of a time, as it is a story. The music is phenomenal and nothing but bops, and the cast? Fishburne and Giancarlo bring their very best and are so charismatic and captivating. They anchor a script that tries to tackle so much- it’s almost as if Lee thought this film might be his last and needed to get it all out just in case, and that unfiltered soul is just a wonder.
I thought it was too unfocused. And the ending came out of nowhere. As if Spike didn't know how to end the movie. Having said that, there are a lot of great moments. The musical segments are for the ages. Seeing such an unapologetic black film was revolutionary back then (Sidney Poitier movies were all about integration) and still is.
