I know far too many of their names fml
I have to take off half a star because of how annoying Tempest's minion guy is (and the storm king - you just can't take him seriously lol), but this is pretty good otherwise. It didn't really utilize Applejack and Fluttershy as much as it could've - which is a bit odd given that they're 2/3 of the main cast lol - but at the same time, they didn't really get into any situations where either one would've been able to help that much (unlike the series premiere, and basically every two-parter episode). I love Tempest Shadow, and am preemptively disappointed that she probably won't show up in the series lol (we just started season 8, and they did reference the events from this movie). Her aura farming gets dragged down by the annoying minion guy, though. The Storm King is pretty forgettable, as well - he's just a wish.com Tirek lol. But Tempest is great, and she's basically the main villain so I can tolerate her boss being Some Guy(TM). I could go on about how other supporting members of the show's cast don't appear/do anything (for example, Starlight and Trixie barely even show up in the background) - but part of that would be due to the production for this starting a year or two before they become supporting characters, and another part is that the princesses are only there to get captured & kickstart the plot lol. I do wonder where Discord was for all of this, though. Anyway, it's a fun adventure movie overall and that's all it needs to be. Sure, a few of the cliches are a bit annoying, but it's not that big of a deal since they aren't dragged out for too long. The soundtrack was pretty good, as well - with "Open Up Your Eyes" being the best song in the movie. Edit: Oh, and something else I thought about is that magic is seemingly rare-to-nonexistent outside of Equestria. Are the horses hoarding it all lol?
A perfectly fun and fine kids movie. Only Twilight and Pinkie were very gay so it’s the best movie ever actually
You know, I gave this a below-average score when I initially watched it, but after thinking about this movie's place in the current wave of animated movies, I've bumped it up to a luke-warm recommendation. What do I mean? With the rise in such classic animated films to come out like The Emoji Movie and The Boss Baby, I almost feel obligated to recommend this movie just on the basis that it didn't insult my intelligence, and is a fine movie for children (or adults who are young at heart). I give the director Jayson Thiesson credit for going all out with the material and attempting to make this a Disney-style musical. The animation notably harkens back to great kid's films like The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, the character Pinkie Pie expressing some pretty colorful and eccentric faces. The point is, the animation is note-worthy, yes, it's all digital, but the work put in deserves appreciation more than some of the shit CG-movies out now. The bar has been set that low. The music is decent, encompassing a live orchestra to fuel the rather catchy songs, the characters are unique and recognizable, and overall, wasn't a chore to sit through. Remember, this wasn't made for me, but I'm glad it respects the adult viewers who are there watching. It's one of the better kid's movies to come out, we need to be encouraging this stuff, so, if you are an adult reading this, it's a decent pick to watch... well, if your kids haven't already asked to see it.
Considering the property is known to resonate with people in unexpected ways... this big-screen adaptation is painfully predictable. Nevertheless, the spectacle of the upgraded animation compared to the TV show is a pleasure to look at.
