An undeniably compelling and haunting horror drama with a brilliant performance from Tatsuya Nakadai. It has a lot of interesting things to say about identity and how often we would rather be nobody than be ourselves, also touches on themes of beauty, freedom, trauma, and loneliness. Technically it is very impressive with such an unbelievable amount of attention to detail. Strange set design and beautifully surreal imagery evoke something deep beneath the surface and enhance the disturbing quality of the film. The score is amazing and elevates the film onto a whole new level. There's a lot of great film techniques used in this film. I really like the use of close-ups and blocking that really make the drama come to life and I thought the sudden on and off lights in the depth of field creating a feeling of alienation was really cool. Also the last sequence of this film has some of the most disturbing visuals I've seen! This would make for a great double feature billing with _Eyes Without a Face_.
The original title of the film is Tanin no Kao.
