_Gift_ is a time capsule. Jane's Addiction just pulls me straight to my early childhood in the early ’90s—growing up in a trailer park with young parents, playing Barbies while soap operas run in the background, or lying in the yard watching planes and clouds go by for what felt like hours. There’s just something about their music and vibe that hits a nostalgic nerve and takes me back every time. The film was a mix of gritty realism and surreal moments. When the chicken gets on Perry's nerves just after he finds Casey dead, it didn’t exactly lighten the mood but added a touch of absurdity that stuck with me. And of course, I loved the music! The scene where "Been Caught Stealing" plays, as Perry chops away at neighborhood flowers to bring home for Casey, stood out too—it’s my least favorite Jane’s Addiction song, but in the movie, the slight humor of the moment made it work for me. Some of the film felt a bit callous, but in a way that usually seemed grounded and realistic. The portrayal of the police, for example, felt familiar and mirrored my own experiences. I could imagine someone as deeply emotional as Perry reacting the way he did to Casey’s death. While it was undoubtedly a bit odd, it mostly just felt very raw and human and, in some ways, understandable. This film offers a glimpse into a lifestyle far from my own, and while I don’t judge it, I’m grateful not to have lived it. For me, the experience was more about immersing in their world than watching a polished movie—and in that sense, it succeeded. But unless you’re a fan of the band or someone who enjoys weird, experimental films, I’m not sure this movie has much to offer.
