As much as I like Wings of Desire (1987) and Paris, Texas (1984), I don't care too much for the other films of Wenders that I have seen. And here we have A Coppola-produced film noir from the pair. There has always been a lot of questions as to how much of this was directed by Wenders as it was rumored that Coppola and Orion, the production company were so dissatisfied with what Wenders shot that Coppola almost entirely reshot it and kept about 30% of the footage Wenders shot. At the time Copppola was very much in a sound-stage phase with films like One from the Heart (1981) and (1984) and it certainly feels more Coppola than Wenders but who knows. Anyway the result is a poor film. A laborious, uninteresting attempt at reviving a genre well and truly gone by this point. I wouldn't class it as a neo-noir, I would just call it a noir in colour and tongue in cheek. And it doesn't work. It's watchable but that's where it stops. Overall it's a dull affair.
