Really dope and unique (at least at the time) zombie flick. You can see the obvious inspiration from Night of the Living Dead, but they take that ball and run with it. Good gore, social commentary, and an obnoxious lead, who you want to see get his just due.
its reputation as a good zombie movie is well deserved.
The Inspector: “You're all the same, the lot of you, with your long hair and f****t clothes. Drugs, sex, every sort of filth! And you hate the police. Don't you?” George: “You make it easy.” Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (1974) - or, if you go by its many titles: (Spanish: No profanar el sueño de los muertos, lit. 'Do Not Profane the Sleep of the Dead'); also known as ‘The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue,’ and, for some reason, it's called ‘Don't Open the Window.’ Well, good luck finding it by its title. Anyway, imagine this for a zombie movie: the living dead roam the UK, but by the end, the public doesn't even realize they are there, and the horrific events are mistaken for separate incidents. The horrors happening in the world that we are unaware of. It's one of the most underrated zombie movies of all time. What sets it apart from typical gore-filled, formulaic zombie films is its anti-authoritarian message. It demonstrates how corrupt and incompetent authority figures ignore a far more sinister and destructive threat: the reanimated corpses causing chaos behind the scenes. The police blame the bloody aftermath left by the dead on the two main characters, and they are both wrongfully accused of the murders. Set against the backdrop of the Manson Murders, with one of the main characters, played by Ray Loverlock, sporting long, hippie-like hair and a beard, the police are quick to blame the gruesome killings on them due to stereotypes about hippies at the time. ‘The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue’ (we'll stick with that title) sadly didn’t gain the same following as George A. Romero’s zombie films, which helped breathe new life into the genre, because it is one of the best zombie movies. But hey, maybe in the future. Happy Halloween everyone!
