[7.0/10] Ah man, here’s the trouble with trying to judge popular art made in the 1940s. On the one hand, a cartoon like this is fully of lots of creativity, from the comic reactions to animals eating insanely spicy tamales, to Porky’s adorable little gait and song, to the ropey movements of the champion bull. There’s so much movement and imagination in this short. But, you know, it’s also really really racist, which hurts my ability to appreciate all the good things about it. That’s the tricky thing about revisiting this sort of stuff. You kind of have to accept them as a product of the times in which they were made or it’s basically impossible to enjoy. That leaves me at the “gentleman’s 7” for lack of a better term, or what I rate when I don’t really know how to rate something. That fits “The Timid Toreador” to a tee. The artistic good and social bad of it are really hard to reconcile.
