>Creepy Caroline: *"We have nothing to hide."* *Midsommar* but more realistic and thought-provoking. I can't say the found footage format really made this story any better or scarier, it could've been made the old fashioned way and be just as good. I was fully captivated and intrigued from beginning to end, nothing new really but I always find cult movies to be fascinating and this one sticks out from the rest. Good little interviews with the folk that felt very grounded and almost sold me at the idea of going to live over there... after that wild third act, i'll pass! Very unsettling, gruesome gory kills, very dark and tragic, and one hell of a strong performance from Gene Jones as Father.
A competently made documentary-style folk horror. This film is very clearly influenced by the Jonestown Massacre incident where a cult leader convinced people to commit mass suicide. I don't think the film itself is really anything that special but it's still entertaining and thought provoking nonetheless. As a found footage, it suffers from some of the issues that most films of the sub-genre do but what makes it horrifying in a very real way is when you taking into consideration that it's based on real events. Even if you can see something coming from miles away, it doesn't make this film any less unsettling. There's a great escalation of suspense and some truly horrific moments which left me uneasy the whole time. Amazing performances from everyone involved, especially Gene Jones as a charismatic and scary cult leader.
Mockyentary that can't quite make up it's mind if it is found footage or not. Plot holes and soundtrack suggests it is not. It's almost like a dramatisation of a mockumentary, if that makes any sense.
This is an awesome movie. But there's one thing that's makes it unrealistic is the majority is black. Ain't no way black people would get involve in some religious cult like that. 😀
