The film does what adaptations rarely manage - it earns its emotional moments independently of the source material. Three friends, cricket, riots, and the slow fracturing of something beautiful. The friendship feels real from scene one and that's entirely because of how well the three leads play off each other. Sushant's Ishaan in particular carries a quiet intensity that hits harder knowing what we know now. When the book does something better, it's usually in the internal world of the characters - the film can't quite access that. But on its own terms it's genuinely moving.
