Pieces of April is a low-budget, indie character drama about family. When April decides to host a Thanksgiving dinner for her estranged, dysfunctional family, their issues are brought to the fore and threaten to tear them apart. Starring Katie Holmes, Patricia Clarkson, Oliver Platt, and Alison Pill, the film has a solid cast that delivers good performance. However, the writing is a little weak, as it doesn’t do a lot of character development and leaves the family’s issues rather vague. Also, the raw, grainy, handheld look of the film can be a bit distracting; though it does effective set a mood. It has some problems, but despite its rough edges Pieces of April proves to be an entertaining and compelling film with a positive message.
Practically defines a movie that sneaks up on you. This movie spins along with one little aside after another and doesn't seem to be driving anywhere...and out of nowhere punches you right in the gut. Better than I expected!
A quirky and rather endearing indie comedy. While Katie Holmes is very good in this film lets be clear about one thing - the best scenes are in the second half of the film with the always-amazing Patricia Clarkson. follow me at https://IHATEBadMovies.com or facebook IHATEBadMovies
