Not my first time to watch it (I think it's the third, actually) and it's alright as a fight movie. My problem with it is it feels like a very skewed wish towards the demise of former heavyweight boxing champion (and arguably one of the best boxers to ever step into a ring), "Iron Mike" Tyson. Complete with a fraudulent rape charge and ensuing civil lawsuit for millions ( _a la_ Desiree Washington vs Mike Tyson) _Undisputed_ is the story of a "disgraced" heavyweight boxer (Ving Rhames) who is sentenced to prison. The heavyweight champion of the professional boxing world squares off in the prison against the so-called "champion" of the prison, where the two finally "settle things". Early in the film you can figure out who's going to win so it's kind of a waste of time to sit through all the mundane, irritating rap music, screeching, and other annoyances about this whole film. The fight scenes are good, yes, and very well choreographed but honestly, the movie itself wasn't all that great. There's very little backstory on ANY of the fighters (a 5-second on-screen overlay with an inmate's name, status, and what they're serving time for is, I guess, supposed to give you all the backstory you need here?) although the main story is NOT difficult to follow; it's about as deep as one of the stories I wrote when I was in junior high school...if that. I'll stop short of saying it's worth watching for the fight scenes, because the movie itself was really bad, and I'm betting you can probably find the fight scenes themselves condensed to a 20-minute YouTube somewhere. But if, like me, you're going to watch the whole _Undisputed_ franchise, then you have to start with this one. Decent acting by Ving Rhames and Wesley Snipes but overall just a really shallow film. The whole thing felt like it was written by some hormonal kid somewhere who was mad that Mike Tyson got a piece of tail from Desiree Washington and they never will, so they exacted their "revenge" by writing this story and got someone to make a screenplay. Oh, and by the way, Desiree Washington was proven to be a liar; she had made the same false "rape" charges against a boyfriend when she was 16 years old, so yeah...they kind of left that part out of this film but yeah, there's that too.
Fight behind bars in this film.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ - Great film. Cool action packed with two great actors. My rating system works: 10❤- Masterpiece 💯 9❤- Excellent 8❤ - Amazing 👌 7❤- Great 🌞 6❤ - Good 👍 5❤ - Average 🤕 4❤ - Bad but watchable :octagonal_sign: 3❤ - Bad 😭 2❤- Awful :face_vomiting: 1❤ - Bull Shit
Good: -Ving Rhames character and performance. A real a-hole. The only reason to follow the film until the end is to see if his ass gets beaten. -The juxtaposition between the two boxers. Snipes, quiet and decent guy who is in prison for having commited a crime in a burst of jealousy and Rhames, arrogant, evil guy incarcerated for rape. -The final fight. Full of action and suspance Bad: -A waste of good actors. The plot and the characters (except for Rhames) are weak for a film that has Wesley Snipes, Peter Falk, Wes Studi, Michael Rooker in the credits -The direction is bad and this is surprising considering this film is directed by Walter Hill. It often looks like a tv movie or a mtv video clip, chaotic fast editing and cheap hip-hop music make things worse. Bluray Quote: "I'am not an athlete, i'm a gladiator. People play baseball, nobody plays boxing" - Iceman
Not as fun as the Mixed Martial Arts sequels.
