Stallone plays a mafia bodyguard charged with protecting the mob boss’s daughter from assassination in retaliation for murders that the boss sanctioned. Stallone seems hamstrung and never really develops the character and Stowe plays a woman who goes from innocent bystander to Mafioso hard-case just too easily. This could have been much, much more with a different director (who never worked with Stallone again) or if Stallone had been given the reigns with the writing, production or direction. This only gets 6 out of 10 stars.
I wanted to like this movie, the premise was interesting. But then it became meh... The whole movie you keep thinking how he could fall in love with that girl? The only reason that comes to mind is that he was watching her for years and haven't seen other women, who are not spoiled and dull.
Avenging Angelo is such a weaksauce, boring cliche that it leaves you wondering how on earth they managed to secure a cast with Sylvester Stallone, Madeleine Stowe, and Anthony Quinn. Released in 2002, this tonally confused mob rom-com lacks both genuine laughs and compelling action, marking what might have been during Sly's real low point in his career right before he revived it with Rocky Balboa. The script relies on tired tropes and flat chemistry, making the entire production feel like a straight-to-bargain-bin afterthought that wastes its high-profile talent.
Anthony Quinn and Madeleine Stowe are fine, but romantic comedies with action are not Sylvester Stallone's thing. I expected better
Cheap and nasty yet somehow enjoyable. Stallone tries an action-rom-com. Madeleine Stowe is playing it as a Hepburn-screwball comedy... And Anthony Quinn mumbles through some lines written for a fortune cookie rather than a screenplay. I have a soft spot for it though. Enjoyable for all its faults. It may be the use of Castellammare Del Golfo and its picturesque Sicilian coastline. 5/10
