Sorry to bother you part 2. I’m here for it. Another hit.
A leftist fever dream that is destined to become an absolute classic. Incredible acting, practical effects, costumes, and soundtrack. See this as soon as possible.
It seems that with I Love Boosters, Boots Riley decided what he wanted to preach before he figured out the plot or characters. The result is a sloppy, yet intermittently entertaining mess that ultimately disappoints. The movie starts off promisingly, with genuinely funny moments from Keke Palmer, Will Poulter, Demi Moore, and the rest of the cast. But as the story expands, the film quickly loses focus and wastes its talented ensemble. Characters are introduced haphazardly before we ever get a chance to connect with the ones already established, creating a bloated and unfocused narrative. LaKeith Stanfield’s character, in particular, feels so unnecessary that he could have been removed from the film entirely. The various storylines never connect in a satisfying or logical way, which hurts the film even within its absurdist framework. Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die showed how this kind of chaos can be handled tastefully and coherently. To Riley’s credit, the film is visually striking, featuring excellent costume design and creative cinematography that makes strong use of geometry and angles. On top of this overstuffed cinematic package, Riley layers in long-winded lectures on concepts like “dialectical materialism,” material that feels more suited to an introductory Marxism course than an entertaining movie. While Sorry to Bother You carried similar political themes, its messaging felt more organic and less heavy-handed. Viewers who already agree with Riley’s politics will probably enjoy what the film is saying. For everyone else, I Love Boosters is unlikely to boost their spirits very much.
This is tough because I agree with the themes and ideas expressed in the movie but the humor in this is diametrically opposed to what I tend to resonate with. There’s an explosion of style throughout but again not really a style I liked. The performances are probably the best part of this but that wasn’t enough make me enjoy this. Would Not Recommend
