Beautiful movie with beautiful music and beautiful ending 9/10.
Would the movie be better without the Sci Fi ending ? If he was just a
weirdo maniac looking for revenge who kidnapped and murdered people
? A big definitive yes. If it was inserted in the middle, brought something to the story, why not. But just at the end, in something that could almost be just a post credit scene? Not worth it. So without that, what do we have ? A guy that kidnap people with his elaborated theories of them being aliens, with lots of info on their species and plans coming out of nowhere. It's wacky, but kinda ok. The cop's investigation into him, pretty good too. As you slowly realize he has
actually killed some people
. Great character and a good shock ending of this storyline. A little family drama. Meh. With just that it's pretty good. And much better to have him
stay a revengeful psychopath than making the aliens real
. Not only does it not bring anything interesting, as it happens too late, it cheapens what he actually did ("ok, but he was right !" NO.
You've just been told
he's a psycho and most of his victims were not aliens
) but also other parts of the movie. For instance the CEO intervention when he says all that for what ? You got two real aliens and the rest was for your own benefit. It is good if real but it is really great if it is just survival improvisation to get a reaction from his kidnapper. What about the girlfriend ? Is she just stupid ? It's hard to see any interest in the character. In the end it's funny, a bit crazy, a bit disturbing. It takes a little time to take off. Good idea, execution could have been better.
Very messy and disjointed. The 2025 remake feels like they stripped down the film to build it back up with thoughtful and coherent decisions. This film does much just for over the top shock value. I would watch the remake first if you want a more thoughtful, well written and constructed film. Then if you want to see the original, wacky, 'eccentric' film I suppose you can watch this.
I found this after watching Bugonia (2025) which is a remake of this movie. I watched a subtitled version, so many of the emotional beats are more difficult for me to perceive. This version strikes many of the same notes as the remake, comes across slightly more brutal and chaotic, and the ending is not quite as striking as the remake. Worth a watch if, like me, you are curious to seek out the movie behind Bugonia and are familiar with Korean movies. Otherwise, stick with Bugonia.
More campy than its Oscar nominated remake. Again, the conclusion really elevates the whole affair.
