What can I say about this film other than it is, in my opinion flawless. Every performance, every character, every scene... Debra Winger should have shared the Oscar with Shirley MacLaine. Few movies can make you laugh and cry OVER and OVER again, but this one does it for me. Even when I catch a scene on cable, I find myself drawn in emotionally and grabbing for my box of tissues. The mother-daughter relationship is so true-to-life and the chemistry between Debra and Shirley and Shirley and Jack is palpable. It is one of the greatest films ever made and should be required viewing for all mothers and daughters. This is an AMAZING and moving film!
I seriously don't understand why this movie is highly rated. It's so bad. Poor story, poor character development... Horrible.
Terms of Endearment doesn’t move with tight narrative momentum. It drifts through years, relationships, and stages of life without much structural discipline. That’s intentional. It relies on its performances to do most of the work. The film exists for the final act, when it finally throws an emotional punch. If that punch lands, you will find the experience to be worth your time.
More tragedy than comedy, I can see why this movie swept the awards. It has a lot of reasons why it shouldn't work - a family drama that drags, horrible characters with no reason for anybody to like them and some strange storytelling that feels chopped up. Yet I found myself really liking it. Winger as Emma was drop dead gorgeous!
Really wanted to like this, but sort of hated it. Looking at the poster as I write this, and my stomach churns at the thought of spending any more time with the two leads. I'm not saying characters need to be likeable for a movie to be good, but something about this movie got under my skin in a really uncomfortable way. It also takes an unearned turn for the maudlin in the third act, and ugh...not for me.
