This movie was political and taking on a serious issue before that became a thing. It's a Western in the sense that it is portraying a time and a place usually associated with that term. But it's missing all the cliches. It jumps from (mostly) being a comedy to a dead serious tone and back in an instant. And while I did laugh at the beginning I didn't at the end. Could have run a bit shorter as there are some parts that drag along or didn't feel essential necessary. Don't watch in on the side, take the time it needs.
I liked this journey through the life of Jack Crabb who has been many things in the west and has seen many things. Western pale face demystifier and redskin reinvicator
Oh, I absolutely hated this. Nothing at all worked for me--the irritating voiceover, the bizarre tone and humor that fell flat time after time, Dustin Hoffman's wacko performance and terrible voicework, etc. While this was ostensibly a revisionist Western that made some strides in Native representation relative to before, it still feels terribly dated. Not for me at all.
Due to the very slapstick-like humor and the not always convincing make-up work, it took me quite a while to warm to “Little Big Man.” At some point, however, I realized that it was a satirical take on the Western, which, on the one hand, does away with old Wild West clichés in relation to Native Americans and, on the other, is probably also a commentary on the Vietnam War. The narrative structure is comparable to “Forrest Gump,” although the characters are a little more exaggerated and tragic moments are given more weight. Personally, I would have liked the satirical aspect to be scaled back slightly to give the whole story a little more impact. But overall, “Little Big Man” is definitely still worth a look today.
An excellent, relatively slow paced movie that depicts the real life of native Americans in the mid-19th century much better than the classic Westerns before. An excellent movie in line with Dances with Wolves.
