In essence, this remake is equally good as the original. In effect, they managed to correct a number of the flaws of the 1946 version. Unfortunately, they also introduced new weaknesses, especially by cutting some storylines short and thus making them irrelevant or difficult to understand/acccept as such in the context of the movie. The biggest flaw, to my mind, is the new ending, as it cuts short one of the most important consequences for Frank. (Watch both movies to understand the reference.). All in all though, it is an excellent and entertaining movie with top performances by Nicholson and Lange.
