[7.25/10] As a longtime fan of _Repo! The Genetic Opera_, I figured _The Devil’s Carnival_ would be worth a watch—and I was right! While I didn’t love it quite as much as _Repo_, that could definitely change with a few more viewings. I actually thought the singing and overall song quality felt more polished here overall. I think this film could have really excelled as a live stage performance actually. I personally would have loved to see that! I thoroughly enjoyed the performances, and the makeup and costumes were fantastic. The concept was strong, but the actual story felt a bit incomplete. The ending was somewhat abrupt, too—not necessarily wrong for the story, but it lacked any sort of comedown. An extra 30 minutes might have helped. I appreciated the additional performance during the credits! I’d definitely recommend this to certain people, and I’m curious to revisit it in the future. I’ll absolutely check out the sequel!
A pretty unique musical, with some great atmosphere and style. Most of the songs struggle pretty hard though, and it sinks the movie for the most part, but there are a couple effective numbers. And with its short runtime it makes it easier to give it a shot, see if it's for you. I'm interested in what they'd do with a sequel/remake, since they leave it on a bit of a cliffhanger.
