Even though the premise sounds like something made for comedy, the story has shockingly little of it. With that said, it's an excellent drama overall. It takes a good look at abuse and forgiveness/redemption in a well-paced, dynamic manner. It's compelling and doesn't overstay its welcome. There are some "fairy-tale"-esque shortcuts, of course, but really not a lot. The acting is also top tier, despite how relatively young the main actors are. All in all, recommended, as you get a far better story than what it looks like by the cover.
