This was my first contact with Asterix in live-action, and I watched it when I was quite young. The memory I had was better than the reality. Depardieu as Obelix has his charm and Clavier does what he can with Asterix, but the movie stays as a succession of gags that sometimes work and sometimes don't. The plot with Caesar and the tax collector is more an excuse to chain comic scenes than a story with its own weight. What it does achieve is capturing something of the mischievous spirit of the comics, although in a very diluted form.
