Good idea, terrible execution filled with plot holes. I think the movie would have worked phenomenally if it was set in the 1950s. The modern era just introduces so many problems it's laughable how they didn't think of it.
Firstly, the modern era just creates too many ways for the people to be completely useless and replaceable by machines. If they made the era in the 1950s when they didn't have all this automated sensor bullshit, then it would have been believable. They literally have drones with fucking machine guns.. Why do they need 2 random snipers. They somehow have auto turrets with miniguns (the type of shit they use against aircrafts), but they don't seem to work? The hollow man still somehow manage to get past all of it in a single attack which consisted of about 100ish of them, even though we see them get shot by the turrets with the sensor very visible, also where are all these monsters coming from? They need real humans to be infected right, so how exactly is there so many humans down there? The first guy said they sent down about 2400 men in the 1940s which none of them came back, that means that if in the 1947 they started guarding the place, presumably not sending down any more hundreds of men because why the fuck would they. They kept doing tests in there like they showed the computers from around the 2000s in there (Still somehow having a great webcam and transmitting it back to the Bartholomew lady even though it's literally 15-20 years old and there was no reason for a webcam in there in the first place lol), but that makes no sense as to why they would send and lose hundreds more men. Over the years, since 1947 when they started guarding the place, there must have been hundreds of runs at the towers, so it's not very likely there would even be any infected left in the gorge by the year 2025, but if the Darklake corporation is so fucking stupid as to keep sending these people in just to lose them by the hundreds then sure why not...

There is one scene in the first battle against them, where one hollow man gets all the way up to Drasa's tower. So that means any of them could have already climbed above the ground and escaped since the tower is even fucking taller for them to get to. And why are the turrets not shooting them anymore did they just ran out of ammo? That would be an amazingly stupid way to build infrastructure for hundreds of turrets only for them to last about 2 minutes. The hanging mines seem to be going off just fine even though some genius decided they should be as close to the stupid metal bars as possible so each time they go off they destroy half of the fucking metal preventing the monsters from climbing up...

Couple more issues and nitpicks that completely made no sense and just made the movie very stupid to me: - The whole idea of having 2 random people go there for a year only to then kill them is just absurdly stupid. They have a whole corporation and personnel that know about the place and the secrets in there down to the exact timer of detonation of the super secret "Straydog" protocol, are they allowed to have families? If so why not have them work there in shifts. If we ignore the fact they could have it automated with cameras.. you know like every other fucking military post in the world, even the top secret ones. You think they don't have their own secrets while also having thousands of staff? The cameras and turrets could guard the gorge while having a few staff as a backup in a military base right at each side of the gorge. The staff would just monitor the cameras and send out a team if anything is wrong. - Why not nuke the fucking thing? The idea of "They haven't bombed the gorge because they are still studying what's in it" might just be the absolutely stupidest part of the movie that just creates a whole lot more plot holes. If they wanna keep studying it why do they have 2 random people every year since 1947 guard the top? Having a constant military base with a research lab in there would just be the most logical thing. Yes there are remains of this in the gorge itself, but that was literally when the virus broke out and they set up the towers. They never went back to try to make a new more stable base ON TOP of the gorge. - Why don't more of the hollow men just go from the edges? They seem to still be intelligent, one of them took Drasa hostage, tied her up, ripped out the root from her, he even made a pretty good fireplace. So that all leads me to believe they can communicate and still plan out their attacks, so why not just rush a single side of an end of the gorge (where there are no towers because these genius tacticians only built 2 fucking towers for the entire span of the gorge, which stretches for 8 kilometers based on the whiteboard drawing that Levi had) that is only guarded by these not so very functional autoturrets, mines and some weak metal bars. - The first battle scene and the leading up to it: When Drasa shoots the bottle with a fucking AK type of rifle with some holographic sight followed by Levi doing the same with an M4 - some AR type of rifle... up to this point the movie was pretty solid but when I saw that, it instantly broke any immersion I had. Why do they even need sniper rifles when these people can just free aim across the entire gorge with incomprehensible accuracy. Late in the movie you see the "Straydog" protocol for the nuke with a thermo blast radius of 4.2km, while there is a second number 3.25km bellow it in a smaller circle for radiation blast which makes the gorge roughly 1km to 1.5km wide based on the image and also the Levi's drawing on the whiteboard, that would be an absolutely absurd distance to shoot a 5.56×45mm for the AR or 7.62x39mm for her AK variant, which have effective ranges of at most 400-500 meters, not to mention the holographic sight which has no magnification, it would be like looking at the fucking tower with your own eyes, which they show multiple times in the movie and it's literally impossible to make out even a human sized silhouette let alone shoot at bottles with such precision. They I guess realized they have the two "best" snipers in the world in their movie and gave them actual long range sniper rifles by the end of the movie to hit the cloakers.
Overall the premise could have been good, but it has so many plot holes its hard to ignore the most obvious stuff. The whole movie is basically just Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy together and it's hard not to like their performances and I still enjoyed their dynamic so my rating is still pretty high considering all the other stuff about the story I disliked. I also really liked the visual design of the environments and the creatures. Especially the
Skull spiders, Teeth tree roots and the underground hivemind tree. The hollow man remind me of Last of Us spore zombies, or the Annihilation monsters which seemed to be their main inspirations, but great either way.
I was so hyped-up about this movie to the point of getting scared it will never live up to the hype. It did. This movie was awesome in so many levels. Two highly accomplished loners get together under extraordinary circumstances. If that isn’t enough, they then proceed to carry out a mission that is all kinds of awesome packed into 2 hours of high octane thrills. Shut up and take my 10/10 rating. :ok_hand_tone2:
Trash. This movie was BAD. Ridiculous, predictable, and cheesy. With the 2-3 main actors they had, you'd be confident in a decent movie.... it wasn't. If there was ever a one and done movie- this is it. There's no reason to ever watch this movie again, unless you're really interested in delving into the endless plot holes. What a letdown.
Wow! One of the best movies I’ve seen in recent years! Great plot, Anya was amazing, great writing, great music. Also I was very greatful of the fact that they accomplished such great intimacy and romance without including unnecessary sex scenes!! Which is something I’m always asking for, for godsake, mediocre directors, stop including unnecessary nude and sex scenes in movies! When your movie is mediocre that's when you need those scenes, cause you got nothing to offer to a real audience. The fact that this movie doesn't have them and it still has some of the best love scenes and romance says it all, you don't need them when your movie is great! So glad I can now watch it with my kids thanks to the director not ruining with sex scenes.
