Felt like a script written by AI, nothing but clichés and heavy-handed American military propaganda. The ending is ridiculous, and I found myself laughing at scenes that clearly weren’t meant to be funny. Even a THC gummy didn't make this movie go down easier.
That was *the* fucking shit. Best 80s action I've seen in years, and I mean that in the very best way possible. It's basically a beautifully shot and choreographed military-sci-fi chase film, and will have you by the b*lls 99% of the time. Evidently the director cares as much about the craft of cinema as he does about blowing shit up, because he deftly incorporates concepts from some of the best classic and contemporary action and sci-fi films whilst successfully creating a film that stands on its own with a genuine sense of scale, dread and consequence, and throws you headlong into the hellfire along with the characters. That it was largely shot on location and featured some excellent stunt work is surely a big part of makes it all work so well. Ritchson is a beast, but beyond being a beast (did I say he was a beast?), brings real heart and soul to the role of 81, which is key given this is an otherwise relentlessly taught script. He's created a character that you'll actually care about. Despite it being easy to dismiss throwback action films as simple or formulaic, this is a lovingly crafted film and an instant favourite. I cannot wait for the sequel.
If you enjoy watching chiseled human beings endure sleep deprivation, mud, and emotional abuse in the name of elite military service, the first half of War Machine was made for you. If you're looking for depth or originality, you will not find it here. But if you need 107 minutes of 'Murican muscle versus alien steel, buckle up. War Machine will not disappoint you, mainly because it will never raise your expectations high enough to disappoint you in the first place.
I liked it quite a lot because it really reminded me of the kind of action movies I used to watch on Friday nights after coming home from partying, the kind with Schwarzenegger, Stallone, or Van Damme. It has that pumped-up B-movie energy, that raw survival mood, that feeling of hard men thrown into an impossible situation and forced to endure however they can. You can also spot some very clear echoes of other things I love. There is that one-by-one elimination feel that brings Deliverance to mind, and also Predator, with the sense that the threat is wiping everyone out almost effortlessly. And then there are moments of combat and tension that really evoke Aliens, especially when the action becomes more physical and exaggerated. Alan Ritchson is also an easy win for me. I already want to watch him in a movie like this, and here he delivers what you expect from him: presence, force, and enough charisma to carry a story that, to be honest, is not exactly overflowing with originality. But I do not think that is really its priority anyway. The movie is not sophisticated, and it does not pretend to be. It goes straight for what it wants: action, tension, noise, muscle, gunfire, and constant threat. And within that territory, it works pretty well. I do not think this is one of those films you need to overanalyze; it is more one of those you enjoy if you connect with this kind of direct, unapologetic action cinema. It is true that it relies on many familiar formulas and that not every member of the cast carries the same weight. You can also feel that it is built out of very visible influences. Even so, it has pace, it holds up well, and it knows how to give you exactly that kind of rough entertainment that sometimes feels especially satisfying. Overall, I liked it because it brings back a kind of action movie that you do not always see so often now, and that, every once in a while, feels great. It may not be a masterpiece, but it is a very enjoyable film if you accept its game and that wild old video-store spirit.
This is one of those action movies that gives us a throwback to the 80s and 90s when Schwarzenegger and Stallone were cranking out popcorn cinema.A great action and Sci-Fi combo!Alan is the most awesome physical specimen of male heroism l! He shows off his leading man capabilities and charisma.
