This is the love every woman lives for…the love every man would die for!
A pianist about to flee from a duel receives a letter from a woman he cannot remember. As she tells the story of her lifelong love for him, he is forced to reinterpret his own past.

Devastating, due primarily to Joan Fontaine's magnificent, vulnerable performance. She does this thing with her eyes that I can't quite articulate, but it communicates an interiority that speaks to me. A lifetime of yearning captured in a glance. Equally brilliant was the camerawork and direction by Ophuls (it's my first of his films)--lots of sweeping, fluid tracking shots that amplified the romanticism and heartbreak on display. Loved it.
Really nice movie about a child who longs for a womanizing pianist from afar. This is her story told on her deathbed through a letter to her love. Though barely remembered by this man, she tells her story of unrequited love and the death of their child.... missed opportunities.... great film
