i watched this entirely on a whim since epix is free through apple+ right now, and this might be a case of low expectations surpassed beyond belief but i legitimately loved this? it's just the right amount of weird, unsettling and funny. kind of in the vein of things like after midnight and the finger. this was someone's ridiculous fever dream and i'm glad it got made.
damn, a boring movie, boredom drama, plot twist was horrible, again another bad movie overrated by snobs. this is a big skip it.
What a beautifully tragic film! Performances were astounding. I didn't agree with the
final reveal/subversion
at all but overall it was a profound experience. The way I expected the story to go was:
I thought Claire was grooming Ansel to make him think that he's saving her from her abusive "dad". I was also expecting her "dad" to be the cult leader, not her. Maybe Mick & Terry showing up changed Claire's plans, I don't know, their deaths just felt sloppy and pointless because Claire didn't even get any money from them. So, she setup all this just to recruit Ansel? Why? For his house? Because he was viewed as a threat to the cult? Those were my objections with the final reveal.
