Synopsis
Magnus Carlsen, widely regarded as the greatest chess player of all time, is challenged by Hans Niemann, a rising star who capitalizes on the meteoric growth of online chess. Niemann’s ascension culminated in an epic, controversy-shrouded victory over Carlsen at the 2022 Sinquefield Cup, which eventually led to allegations and revelations of cheating. Determined to clear his name, Niemann fights his way back to the top of the chess world, setting the stage for a high-stakes rematch with Carlsen in 2024.

Untold: Chess Mates covered a story that I vaguely knew existed, but I had almost no real background on because I don't follow competitive chess. Going in mostly blind ended up helping, as the twists, drama, and personalities involved made for a surprisingly engaging watch. What stood out most was just how crazy the situation really was. Even without being invested in the chess world, the documentary does a good job of making the stakes and controversy understandable. The best sports documentaries are often about people and conflict rather than the sport itself, and this one follows that formula well. I wouldn't call it an essential documentary, but it's an interesting story that I was happy to learn more about. Sometimes that's all you can ask for from a documentary. Rating: 3/5 – 75% – Worth Watching
