All they wanted was their chance to be men... and he gave it to them.
When his cattlemen abandon him for the gold fields, rancher Wil Andersen is forced to take on a collection of young boys as his cowboys in order to get his herd to market in time to avoid financial disaster. The boys learn to do a man's job under Andersen's tutelage, however, neither he nor the boys know that a gang of cattle thieves is stalking them.

One of the great late western of John Wayne and one of his best roles. Very entraling story about boys becoming men during an era where nothing was given to you on a platter. Extremly well written script with a healthy portion of humor. The last couple of minutes are really intense.
This is essentially a western-fairytale in classic Hollywood Western style. That said, it is to my mind also an excellent and entertaining movie with heart and soul … something many other movies lack. The aging Wayne assumes his age and plays his classic grumpy, hard but fair character that fit the movie perfectly. Watch it as th dark fairytale that it is and you will enjoy it even more.
First, I usually hate 1950-70s westerns. I also usually hate John Wayne movies. This is great!! It is true to the darker side of the west, rather than glorifying it. This was THE western that John Wayne was born to make. It is one of the greatest movies of all time. A great watch. You will cry. 10/10
