It's time to set the record straight.
When Rick, a past-his-prime wedding singer, meets fading boy-band star Danny during a gig, the two bond over music and a late-night jam session. But when Danny turns one of Rick’s songs into the hit that reignites his career, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves - even if it means risking everything he cares about.

Not a film was all that hyped to watch tbh but I thought I’d see if it could surprise me but it’s kinda what I’d thought it would be it’s not a bad film just a little bit of a generic one. The story was hard to get into for the first half I wasn’t that keen on the characters either so that made it harder for me to enjoy the story. I’ve watched surprisingly most of Paul Rudd’s movies so I know how great he can be I’m not sure he’s picking the right movies lately death of the unicorn, Anacanda and now Power ballad all three aren’t bad films but none of them are amazing and I think Rudd is way better than them movies. I’m surprised I didn’t enjoy this more though because Nick jonas I’ve liked since his Camp Rock days and I love the Jonas Brothers I don’t know they didn’t do a great job with his character enough for me to care to much about it. Sandy was probably my favourite character he just doesn’t give a shit about anything it was funny he pretended to be Danny’s security to get backstage and his friendship with Rick was wholesome. The music was okay I guess “I wrote a song about you” is one of them ones that annoyingly gets stuck in your head for some reason and that section is the only part I know lol. A big thing that I did appreciate about Power Ballad it shined a light on what the music industry can be like and the way artists can be treated and pressured into doing things they don’t actually want to do and btw Mac was one annoying son of a bitch couldn’t stand him. The main thing that saved this movie from me giving it a lower rating was the ending that was done very well and the mother and daughter felt more likeable and it was nice the film ended on a positive note at least still will only give this a 6/10.
Power Ballad wasn’t exactly on my watchlist for this year, but I thought I’d check it out anyway as I love Paul Rudd. It’s safe to say that he hasn’t really picked the right films lately as so far the ones I’ve seen recently like Death of a Unicorn and Anaconda have been decent films, but not great. This pretty much falls into that same exact category. I didn’t mind this movie, and it certainly had some good moments, but it’s one of those films which I found quite hard to get into at first. The second half of the film was definitely a lot better than the first half in my opinion and I think that’s when I started to enjoy it a little more. Paul Rudd was pretty good and I don’t think his singing was half bad either, although it’s not his best film by any means. I guess the same goes for Nick Jonas, but I did find his character very unlikeable, which is obviously what the movie wanted you to feel. But I think the most unlikeable person in this was Mac as he was a total asshole and I couldn’t stand him to be honest. I thought the story was quite nice, but I think I always have too much of a soft spot for happy stories such as this one. I wouldn’t say it was an amazing one, but it was okay. I can’t say I was a huge fan of the music though, but there’s no denying that “how to write a song” is a bloody catchy tune. When I came out of the cinema I literally couldn’t get it out of my head. I still can’t as I’m written this review. For me the best part of this movie was hands down the ending as I actually really liked that part. I don’t think this movie was one of the best films to come out of this year, but it’s a decent film and I’m quite happy to give it a 7 out of 10 at least. It’s nothing mind blowing, but I didn’t mind it. 7/10
Saw this at an early screening at the opening night of the Phoenix Film Festival. I've enjoyed all of John Carney's films and this one is no exception. He's got a niche (music + Ireland) and he's good at it, so I don't blame him for sticking with it. It's a simple setup that does have to overcome a slight suspension of disbelief issue early on (really...no one remembers him playing this song??), but other than that it's a good time from start to finish. The writing is quick/sharp. Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas are both having a great time. And though I was worried about a potentially clunky ending, they pulled it together and I came away smiling.
