Oh my. This Hamlet is set in modern day, like the Much Ado film, but, unlike that film, it does everything wrong. Ophelia by Julia Stiles is interesting. Kyle MacLachlan is an excellent Claudius, but other than these, it makes such bizarre choices at every turn that I actually laughed at it. It’s so bad, it’s funny. For example, it’s set in New York at Denmark Corporation in - wait for it - Elsinore Hotel. It would actually make a good drinking game: take a drink every time it makes a bizarre yet funny choice. It’s the first film version to watch, but if you know the play reasonably well, it’s definitely the version to see with some friends if you want to laugh at a film.
