An excellent crime movie that's one of the best in the genre with a terrific car chase and some great performances.
Two years before Lethal Weapon, this film introduced the "I'm too old for this shit" line. To Live and Die in L.A. is pretty much Heat meets Lethal Weapon, The Departed and an episode of Miami Vice.
This film has some thrilling moments.
Any movie that can transport me back to my childhood playing GTA: Vice City in 2002... well, what can I say, it's a 10 all day in the play.
I have seen this before but didn't remember anything about it. But I do remember that it didn't exactly bowl me over. And I don't remember anyone loving it until quite a few years after it was released but now it seems to have the reputation of being one of Friedkin's best films. It is streaming on Amazon Prime so I decided to take another look at it and see if it needed a reappraisal. A gritty crime drama and I enjoy that type of film in general but again, I don't think this is a particulary spectacular example. And I really look at it as part of Freidkin's decline. Having said that, it may be a case of me not connecting too deeply with Friedkin's work in general. Of course I love The Exorcist (1973) and I like The Sorcerers (1977) very much. But The French Connection films and Cruising (1980) for example were pretty average to me. It's not a bad film. It's probably worth watching. But I can't see how its reputation has grown to the point it has that it has such a high score on various platforms. It pales in comparison to the the top American and European crime films of the 70's. I wish I could like it more but I can't lie, it's somewhere between average and good but nowhere near great.
