A total blast. An homage to several old horror flicks, that's hilariously done. Great characters, great dialog, awesome effects. I love this movie, and it still holds up.
For fans of 80's horror in particular. It's not easy to be constantly entertaining, but this does it. I've read the negative comments on imdb and they are mostly shallow. It's gross? It was meant to be. It's not as good as movie x y and z? Defensive and this movie is a homage to mostly 80's cheese (I suppose it's only cool to like modern 80's horror style when it's Stranger Things, which was completely contrived 80's.) Boring? If that's what your opinion is, that's OK. Not funny? It's humorous, and another opinion. It's silly/stupid? Yes it is. Some people are above fun and see that as a negative, I forgot. It's not perfect by any means. Its well written. It is stupid and fun. It will remind you of other movies. It that bother you, don't watch it. Here's a re some movies it may remind you of. Shivers. Night of the creeps. Society. Tremors. The Blob. The faculty. The Fly.
It's just perfectly cheesy enough to make it fun, and it has a hell of a cast!
This is a jammed packed homage to the horror genre and it has everything that you really want out of B-horror films. It feels really well balanced as far as horror comedy goes. The comedy is quite good for a 2000s film and the horror is genuinely nasty and gross. There is tons of grotesque practical effects that enhance the appeal of the film and the combination of practical and CGI works really well here. Story-wise, I keep thinking of Rabid while watching this but the film itself is so much fun. Some elements of the casting don’t really work well though. I thought Nathan Fillion and Elizabeth Banks have zero chemistry. Michael Rooker is great but sadly he does not get enough screen time. Overall it's still a decent watch. James Gunn clearly loves horror and hopefully he can take a break from those superhero nonsense.
