I'm so glad I didn't know anything about this movie before watching. Seeing the transformation from a domestic melodrama to a bizarre proto-horror movie to...something else was truly shocking. I see criticism of the lack of score, but for me it contributed to a quiet stillness that ramped up the tension, especially in the final third.

Finally watching it again after 10 years and oh, man, this is still one of the best horror movies I've ever seen in my life. The tension just never lets up, Clouzot knows exactly how to leave us on the edge of our seat with the most simple and apparently insignificant details...
