Love it...
Isn't it cool to be a M. Night Shyamalan hater these days? It's gotten so ridiculous that it's now harder to listen to "refined" movie fans dismiss one of his movies out of hand than it is to actually sit through one of his latest efforts. Granted his later output has not been as good, but his visual style remained exceptional. "The Village" is where things really began to fall apart for M. Night. I think his fall from grace stems from the very misleading pre-release advertising that sold this as a monster/horror flick. Turns out it was nothing of the sort and that upset viewers a great deal. Fair enough but "The Village" still succeeds as a suspenseful and visually beautiful film.
Ok firstly this cast is nuts. Like, every 5 minutes someone else wanders on screen and you’re like wait is that…? And it is. Stacked! What I really love though is the little narrative sleight of hand around the halfway mark where it quietly swaps out protagonists, and Ivy’s such an enchanting character to follow. Her blindness is used very cleverly to manipulate what elements of the plot she (and we) isn’t allowed to see. Also my experience of the film was 100% juiced by the fact that I knew nothing about it going in, and I think that’s the perfect way to meet it, rather than waiting for The Twist like you’re reading Wikipedia in your head. And honestly I think this has aged really well and would’ve banged if it got released today. The mood, the setting, the performances – it all feels strangely timeless. Good movie! Four stars
huh just like in the movie dogtooth people are fucked up
The more M. Night Shyamalan films I see, the more I am convinced that The Sixth Sense was just a fluke and that he's actually a hack. This was so boring. I actually skipped through a lot of it.
