The protagonist is really a very sweet girl

Salinger-themed movies have become something of a trend in recent years yet there still hasn’t been a Catcher adaptation. Why? I don’t know but fans may enjoy this true life tale of a woman who briefly crossed paths with the author.

The first thing that catches your eye here is the Spanish title: ‘Sueños de una Escritora en Nueva York’ (Dreams of a Writer in New York). The original was much more elegant and direct, but hey... who knows what happened there. That said, the film is quite easy to place: if you liked ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, you'll find a very similar vibe here, although more literary and much less glamorous. This is a simple drama with touches of comedy, designed for lovers of classic American literature and, in particular, for those who enjoy stories about creative vocations, oppressive offices and imposing bosses. The film adapts Joanna Rakoff's novel of the same name, and it's clear that it's more interested in the atmosphere and characters than in constructing a grand plot. In that sense, the interpretive weight falls almost entirely on Margaret Qualley, who spends half the film with that permanent ‘I'm about to cry’ expression, and Sigourney Weaver, who commands attention just by appearing on screen. The rest of the cast provides good support, but it is these two who really carry the story. This is not a film that seeks big twists or strong emotions, but something more intimate, pleasant and very specific in what it wants to convey. A small, decent and charming film, ideal for a quiet afternoon if you like the publishing world and stories of personal growth with a scent of literature and nostalgia.

This was a really wonderful character portrait of a young woman seeking her own contentment, while keeping an eye out for those in need of comfort from the travails of their own lives. Both Margaret Qualley and Sigourney Weaver were exceptional in this, and I would recommend this film simply for their efforts alone. Ms. Qualley has truly come into her own as one of the finest young actors working today, while Ms. Weaver gets better w/ age, and her work is capable of rivaling that of any actor in the field.
