It’s Maxine Peake misery movie time again. A grim and unsettling folk story that has fine performances but an overly depressing tone. Steer clear if you want to feel elated.
Bleak to a fault, Gwen tries to ape the Eggers folk horror tale of ye olde hardships and struggle (this time in Industrial Revolution Wales!) but only ever manages to depress rather than scare or excite. Clearly competently crafted, it's a shame that such fine production values are squandered on a shallow tragedy gallery tour like this. There is no sharp edge, no climactic pay-off; just harrowing bleakness that is miserable viewing.
Not a horror movie in the traditional sense, but don't let that turn you away. It's a not-so-unrelatable tale of when life deals you a horrible hand...only set in Wales during the Industrial Revolution. The pace and cinematography lend perfectly to the despair of this poor family. Don't look for redemption or happiness in this film; there is no payoff, as plays true to the story.
A very slow folk horror with beautiful cinematography and atmosphere. Not sure about the "horror" part though as there's not much in here and there isn't really any action happening either. I found it a little boring and almost fell asleep because it's so slow. No payoff whatsoever.
