Watched this in memory of the incredible Maggie Smith. She is absolutely fantastic in this movie, as is Pamela Franklin as Sandy. All of the performances really are quite good, Jane Carr as Mary McGregor as well. Sandy's confrontation with Miss Brodie at the end was incendiary stuff, Franklin really brought it in that scene. What brings the whole thing down is how creepy everyone is about the underage girls. Seeing Teddy Lloyd and Sandy together was gross to watch, I don't really care what was normalized back then. But what really threw me was the way Miss Brodie talked about Jenny, how Jenny, her at the time I believe 11 or 12 year old student, would go on to be a great lover, and how she was practically raising Jenny to get f****d by Lloyd. It really grossed me out. I also had kind of a hard time with all of the politics, it seemed like Miss Brodie was a supporter of Mussolini?? That threw me lol. I didn't understand the Spanish Civil War stuff (when they kept mentioning Franco I thought it was some kind of conflict with the French lol) either, but I don't think not knowing the specifics about that was a huge detriment. This was 100% worth watching just for the masterclass that Maggie Smith puts on, and I was very happy to see all of the other phenomenal performances
The movie is a ride with unexpected laughs and high drama. Incredible performance by Maggie Smith. It's the polar opposite of Good Will Hunting. A lot of similarities but a different direction.
