The film has got charm and it's nice to see Amicus getting away from their usual horror anthology films. Cushing and Lee give their usual great performances. Cushing in particular takes a bit of a departure in playing a vulnerable everyman facing psychological horrors and demonic possession. Meanwhile Freddie Francis delivers on a micro-budget the sort of visionary cinematography that won him 2 Oscars. The story itself is adapted from the Robert Bloch (of Psycho fame) short story "The Skull of the Marquis de Sade". As such, the pacing towards the middle of the film can sag as it stretches slim source material to feature length. But the mix of gothic horror and some mildly psychedelic scenes is great for fans of the genre and period of British film making (as well as being somewhat ahead of its time).
What was that?! It's incredibly boring, feel like I've been watching for 3 hours. I didn't find any exciting thing about this movie.
