I thoroughly enjoy Deranged. It is silly in parts, but Roberts Blossom embodies an Ed Gein who feels chillingly real, and the true-crime spine of the story remains morbidly fascinating. It fails to capture the grim darkness of the real events, but some scenes are undeniably effective. I love the skeletal props. This lesser-known horror film is one that needs to be seen.

Add comedy onto the genre. It plays out like the the Ed Gein story as told by an amateur theatre group. Cheesy, cheap and silly. The dialogue is scrappy. The performances are mediocre at best. Liked because it's cult rather than any good.

In a lot of ways it's the Canadian answer to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Like most things Canadian, it's a bit slower and more dry and dimwitted than its American counterpart, but it retains that not-quite-foreign, not-quite-American quality that makes it a worthy curiosity.
