Die 10-jährige Charlie wacht eines Morgens auf, nur um festzustellen, dass in der Küche des Hauses, in dem sie mit ihrer Mutter Marie lebt, ein Fremder steht und ihr Frühstück zubereitet. Henry Joseph Church wurde von Maries ehemaligem Liebhaber angeheuert, solange für Mutter und Tochter zu sorgen, bis Marie stirbt. Da Charlie nichts von der Krankheit ihrer Mutter weiß, begegnet sie dem Koch anfangs mit einigem Misstrauen. Doch Marie lebt viel länger, als ihre Ärzte gedacht hatten, und so entwickelt sich über die Jahre langsam eine freundschaftliche Beziehung zwischen Charlie und Mr. Church, gleichwohl der sonst so freundliche Ersatzvater über sein Privatleben absolutes Stillschweigen hält. Als Marie schlussendlich doch noch ihrer Krankheit erliegt und die mittlerweile am College studierende Charlie nach einem One-Night-Stand schwanger wird, nimmt Mr. Church sie bei sich auf …

Oh, I discovered that I can produce manly tears too. And I did so for about an hour, during this movie. On a Father's Day. Very recommended.

I had no idea about this amazing movie until I review "food movies" list in Trakt. I love this community as it helps me to know the movies which I had never heard before. Mr. Church is a movie that you can enjoy with Eddie Murphy's amazing act.

Eddie Murphy turns in an excellent performance as Mr. Church, and he is surrounded by a talented cast. The film never overdoes the sentimentality, so any tears that fall will be earned and not forced. It's good, and a showcase for what Murphy can do as an actor, without the need for multi-character prosthetics and fart jokes.

Mr church is a beautiful timeline of: Life, Love, and Family followed by mixed emotions. I thought the story was heartwarming, and well performed with a top cast that shared some beautiful chemistry, specially (Eddie Murphy) with a overwhelming performance.
