Allegory. I got it. Broken family with alcoholism and drug abuse as threat. Broken car with vicious monster as threat. Not since viewing Gareth Edwards's 2010 "Monsters" have I felt so whacked over the head with the obvious stick. I'm giving it an extra couple of points for the actual beast. You know, the monster that attacks the car. Then subtracting a point for the annoying characters. The acting is good, I just don't want to know people like them.

The metaphor of the monster representing the mother’s alcoholism is pretty obvious, but the movie itself? Total letdown. ​While the message is deep—the kid learning that you can’t defeat every monster and having to move on alone—the execution just didn't hit the mark for me. Great concept, weak delivery.

It was really well made, but this is more family drama than horror, and not in an interesting way. I was bored for most of the movie. They just dragggggged out a very stereotypical (albeit relatable) family conflict story, and by overdoing it they made it annoying rather than emotionally driven. It kind of reminded me of The Babadook in that respect. I just wanted them to stop talking about their problems and show me some real horror!

This would have been way better as a drama. Actresses deserved better than this. I would’ve preferred Scott Speedman’s character as the villain, instead of a badly designed creature.

I was highly impressed with this one. I was searching for a good old fashioned monster movie and found a little drama wrapped neatly within.
