Just watched Basket Case. I can see the idea behind it. On paper, it actually has a pretty messed-up body-horror concept: two brothers, separated against their will, one treated more like a monster than a person, and now there is revenge involved. That part could have worked. But fuck, this movie is badly made. The biggest problem for me was the sound. It has that old mono feeling with way too much echo, like the dialogue was recorded in a hallway or a cheap room with no control over the audio. Bad picture and cheap effects can sometimes add charm to a low-budget horror film, but bad sound gets tiring fast because your brain has to fight the movie just to listen to it. The acting and dialogue are also very rough. Some scenes feel like people are just reading cheap lines, and some of the conversations are so one-sided that it feels like the monster/creature is barely part of the scene. Then halfway through the movie they finally explain the childhood/backstory, and instead of it feeling tragic or disturbing, it mostly feels like the movie is dumping information because it forgot to give you enough earlier. There are also small stupid things that stand out, like trying to block a door with a desk even though the door opens out into the hallway. At that point the desk does nothing. It is just there because movies use “push furniture against the door” as a visual shortcut. So yeah, Basket Case is one of those films where I understand why it became cult trash, but I would not call it good. The idea is there. The weirdness is there. The ugly low-budget energy is there. But the execution is rough as hell. Good concept. Badly made movie. More “what the fuck am I watching?” than actual horror.

Fun at times and not so much at others. I can appreciate the cheesy effects and acting but I did hope for a more fun and interesting story.

What a disgusting little piece of trash this is. Exactly what you would expect. I wonder how I would have reacted had I not heard the "twist" prior to seeing the flick.

Love this movie. And the director. Henenlotter is a real kook. An excited, lovable kook. Watch the homemade "documentary" he and a hype man (?) made on the Basket Case blu-ray. You can't not like the guy. Also on the Frankenhooker commentary the guy can't stop talking! I love him.
