I slept on this one for way too long, so glad I finally gave it a chance. This is a solid anthology, bringing genuine horror and laughs, with interesting sociopolitical commentary, most of which is still relevant even today. It's entertaining as hell! Each segment is well made and effective, builds in such an interesting and satisfying manner. It's filled with memorable characters and lots of scary laugh out loud moments. The practical effects are a lovely gory surprise. If I had to pick the best segment, that would be Hard-Core Convert. The sensory overload of flashing lights in that one makes it more affecting to watch.
A very different anthology Horror with stories about monstrosities that aren't what you'd expect. "Tales From the Hood" is harsh and features terrible people doing horrible things. Through the first half of the movie it played like typical Horror, but as it neared it's conclusion, it turned into a shocking and brutal movie. This is filled with social commentary and is loaded with stories where the bad guys are punished for their evil ways. The vengeance of the victimized is paid in full here and the ending is shocking and vicious. I did not have much fun watching this, and to the film maker's credit, I think that was the goal.
Clarence Williams is great as the Horror host, through this effective and funny anthology. Not only works as a horror film, but peppers in some really social issues without beating you over the head with it.
Whoa... this movie was a total and very pleasant surprise. I loved every damn second of it. No further comments.
