I had heard about the Quatermass films from reading Starlog back in the day and finally got to see this. You certainly know it is a half century old film, no question, but there are some real moments of suspense and a good through line. The man that plays Victor is particularly chilling in his scenes.
An early space alien/body horror film, "The Quatermass Xperiment" follows the deterioration of the lone survivor of a space journey. Quatermass and the London Police pursue the astronaut who is consuming victims, both human and animal, at a steady pace. Ultimately, the film can't relay its potential end-of-the-world conceit to the scale necessary through its visuals. The alien monstrosity is neat enough, but the expression of how only seconds remain before it conquers the planet is unconvincing. Quatermass's final moment in the movie hardly ties everything up nice and tidy, but it rewards as it conjures potential "What's next?" questions.
Charming little sci-fi/horror with a dick scientist, space rockets, some body horror, and, for the time, pretty decent special effects. The only real gripes I have with it, is that the whole thing sounds like an old radio play, and that the pacing is not the best. Not the best Hammer production I have seen, but decent enough to keep me entertained.
