Der junge Joe, ein Herumtreiber und gescheiterter Schriftsteller, heuert auf dem Lastkahn des bodenständigen Les und seiner rätselhaften Frau Ella an. Eines Nachmittags entdecken Joe und Les die Leiche einer jungen Frau, die auf dem Wasser treibt. Ein Unfall? Ein Selbstmord? Oder sogar Mord? Der Polizei geht ein Verdächtiger ins Netz, aber bald wird klar, dass Joe mehr über die ertrunkene Frau weiß, als er zugeben möchte. Inzwischen bahnt sich eine leidenschaftliche Affäre zwischen Joe und der schönen Ella an.

Wikipedia categorizes this as a neo-noir erotic drama and I think that is a very accurate genre. I haven’t rated this as I’m writing this because I’m still trying to figure out how I feel about it. I think for what it wanted to be, it gets it perfectly right. A film like this relies wholly on performance and the acting in this is bang on, as expected with powerhouses like Ewan McGregor and Tilda Swinton. Everyone delivers a solid performance; there were no awkward characters in the bunch. As far as /what/ this movie is, the entire time I kept thinking it’s, in a bizarre way, almost a slice-of-life. A morbid and depressing, erotic but not romantic, slice-of-life around the discovery of a dead body. Considering the main character’s name is Joe, it seems pretty clear to me that the title comes about in the literal biblical sense: a young Adam who tasted the forbidden fruit and, through no real fault of his own, suffers the consequences with no reprieve in sight. I can’t really say I enjoyed it, but at the same time I’m not sure you’re meant to. It’s intentionally grim, hopeless, and depressing and the climax is but a brief glimmer of hope for absolution, only for it to come to nothing. Intentionally dissatisfying. So it’s good for what it is, but what it is isn’t exactly pleasant. But it evokes a reaction and a feeling, as all good art should.
