It opens with a "quarter-final" matchup (for the King of the Ring) between "Hardcore Holly" (Robert Howard) vs "X-Pac" (Sean Waltman). This is a match I have absolutely zero interest in so I paid little attention. Next up is a very interesting match that turned out much better than anything I would've expected: Kane vs The Big Show. Honestly, I wouldn't expect much from these two giants, but they actually put on a very good match with a great finish. Highly entertaining, and it will be interesting to see where this one goes. So much seems to happen in the few short weeks between PPV cards these days that it's hard for me to keep up with what's going on, but apparently the ongoing squabble between Vince McMahon and his son, Shane, has been mended (since the conclusion of the previous _Over the Edge_ PPV) and now they're supposedly teaming against "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. By this time, however, Shane has "been injured and is unable to wrestle" so we're left thinking Vince will go one-on-one in a ladder match against "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Little vignette inserted here to further emphasize what all has happened, and then we have a very quick (thankfully) match between "Billy Gunn" vs Ken Shamrock. Wow, what a stinker. And talk about stinkers...the next match was "Road Dogg" (Brian James) against "Chyna" (Joan Laurer) for the final spot in the "King of the Ring" tournament. This one, in spite of their affection for "Road Dogg", had the crowd starting to get restless and even the boobirds started coming out. Wow, this was just... I guess the WWF has fallen to a new low with storylines like this. Fortunately, following this stinker was a decent tag-team match betwen "Edge" and "Christian" squaring off against "The Hardy Boys" (Jeff and Matt Hardy). This was one of the better tag-team matches the WWF has put on in recent years, since the original "Legion of Doom" (Road Warrior Hawk and Road Warrior Animal) lost that edge they'd had at one point. (I won't even comment on the ridiculous "L.O.D. 2000" in which "Droz" was supposed to replace Road Warrior Hawk.) With the explosive action between these four younger, lighter guys, the action is fast and definitely holds your attention. Next up is a little "mini-leadin" up to the supposed match between Vince McMahon vs "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Brief little tit-for-tat between McMahon and "WWF Commissioner" Shawn Michaels (Michael Hickenbottom, who simply cannot stay away from the spotlight for more than 5 minutes) then we move into another "semi-final" match for the KoTR title, this time between "Kane" vs Billy Gunn. This ends in a not-so-surprising finale, then we move on to the next "semi-final" match, this one between "X-Pac" (I still prefer "X-Punk") vs "Road Dogg" (Brian James). I could easily have skipped this one, as I don't care for EITHER of these jugheads, but fortunately the match was so fast that I didn't have to. Now we move into one of the "main events", this one featuring "The Rock" (Dwayne Johnson) vs "The Undertaker" (Mark Calaway). Great match, very entertaining and surprisingly pretty fast-paced (considering the size of Calaway; he is NOT a lightweight that can fly around the ring like those small guys.) Interesting finish, to say the least. Now it's time for the final KoTR matchup between "X-Punk" vs Billy Gunn. I don't apologize; I just don't see how or why WWF tried giving Sean Waltman such a push. This scrawny punk is not main event material, and he certainly isn't a "martial arts master" like they try to make him. He's just a little punk kid who got noticed because he managed to hang around some REAL performers. I'm not a fan of Billy Gunn (Monty Sopp) either so I have little interest in who actually wins the King of The Ring this year. Can we just get this one over with? Not surprisingly, this one didn't last too long. ("Not surprising" because this is at least the third or fourth match both of these performers have worked in one evening; they must be exhausted!) Now we have a 5-minute backstory of the build-up to the "Main Event", featuring "Stone Cold" Steve Austin squaring off against WWF Owner/CEO Vince McMahon. The buildup is a great laugh, very entertaining, and - from a wrestling standpoint - a great story. Turns out that the "secret" tag-team partner joining Vince McMahon is "The Lethal Weapon" Steve Blackmon... or is it? This two-against-one handicap match actually turned out to be much more entertaining than what I would've guessed; major props to both Vince and Shane McMahon, along with (of course) one of the best performers in the history of sports entertainment in "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. They put on a great show, especially considering how dangerous the setting was (numerous extension and stepladders all over the place). The 2:15:07 mark.... dang! That has to be one of the greatest moments in WWF history; that was absolutely classic! LOL This was brilliant; I have to admit this was one of the most entertaining matches I've watched in a long, long time. Give "good ol' JR" Jim Ross a lot of credit: he made this match so much more entertaining with the way he was calling this, telling "Stone Cold" at one point, _"I can't do my job in these unsafe working conditions, Steve..."_ LOL This was great. I haven't been real big on many of these "King of The Ring" pay-per-view cards but I have to say, this one - especially the main event featuring Austin vs The McMahons - was absolutely great. You can actually see, in some places, the slightest hint of a smile on Austin's face, a tell-tale sign that he was having as much fun performing as the fans were in watching it. Brilliant finish to what may not have been the best PPV in their history, but wow, that closing match made it all worth sitting through.
