Very simple movie. Not much really happens.
Surprised at the Screenplay win, because this felt like a muddled mess. Was it a sports movie, a hangout movie, a class movie, a family movie? It was all very fine, as far as this sort of thing goes, mostly due to the winning chemistry of the foursome and the decent action filming. I couldn't get too worked up about it though.
If you didn't grow up in a University Town yet didn't go to the university, or grew up in the '70s or '80s, or have parents who gave you nothing while you had visions of conquering the entire world without any real skills, or had your own idols shattered by their reprehensible behavior, then you won't get much out of this movie. It may be about young guys trying to find their way in life, but it is made for old guys who remember what was it like to have idealistic dreams only to have them ground out of you by life itself. Paul Dooley's monologue about having cut the stones to build the buildings of the university only to feel like the buildings themselves were too good for him is the heart of the entire film. The world moves forward and forgets the people who built it. Most of the obstacles overcome in life are Pyrrhic victories. That doesn't mean they were pointless, just that the world really doesn't care what happens...life goes on and on and on.
Dull. Comedy is okay with a good cast. Dooley shines more than Barrie, but she got the Oscar nomination. People always call this a bicycling movie and the story barely covers it. Meh.
A group of cyclists by vocation.
