Average at best, maybe netflix should’ve let a Japanese director handle this one, it might’ve turned out more authentic. There are tons of great Japanese made Yakuza movies, Sonatine, Hanabi, Battles Without Honor and Humanity, etc... do yourself a favor and watch one of those instead.
A small budget film that dreams of being an epic drama but winds up only being an epic fail. The sets are so cheap they look like they were made for a cheap Lego movie knockoff and Jared Leto takes himself so seriously no one else can. It's obvious he is one of the producers as all the women fall in love with him and even the prostitutes follow him around offering him a discount. The stretch marks on his ego have been showing ever since he squeezed out his Oscar, so that he and this pretentious movie deserve to be left alone together.
Stuff _happens_ to the main character and there's not justification or foundation for his reactions, so the whole plot feels like an angsty weaboo's dream because he _totally_ beat-up those guys and the yakuza boss made **him** a yakuza and the hot asian lady will totally love ~~me~~ him. The cinematography / characterization / etc. is good enough (not really my expertise).
I wouldn't say this was a waste of time but I felt it was too long and the story could have been more engaging with less filler. The last 20 minutes definitely helped make up for the first hour and a half.
I don't understand why people don't like this movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a great movie.
