Ray Arcel hat als Boxtrainer so ziemlich alles gesehen in seiner langjährigen Karriere – zumindest glaubt er das. Doch als er dann zum ersten Mal das außergewöhnliche Talent von Roberto Duran mit eigenen Augen zu sehen bekommt, ist er ganz aus dem Häuschen. Duran, den man auch „Hände aus Stein“ nennt, weil er angeblich als Teenager ein Pferd mit seinen Fäusten zu Boden geschlagen haben soll, ist das womöglich größte Boxtalent, das Arcel über den Weg gelaufen ist. So ganz grün sind sich die beiden speziellen Charakterköpfe trotzdem zunächst nicht, als sie beginnen zusammenzuarbeiten, aber der Erfolg gibt ihnen schon bald recht. Doch alles droht zu zerbrechen, als Duran bei seinem zweiten Meisterschaftskampf gegen den legendären Sugar Ray Leonard plötzlich das Handtuch in den Ring wirft und seine Karriere beenden will...

A fairly solid biopic, Hands of Stone tells the story of professional boxing champion Roberto Duran. While rising through the ranks Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran teams up with legendary manager Ray Arcel to help him win a championship, leading to a rivalry with welterweight champion “Sugar” Ray Leonard. Starring Edgar Ramírez, Usher Raymond, Robert De Niro, and Ana de Armas, the film has a solid cast that delivers some good performances. However, the script doesn’t really develop Duran all that well, or make him all that sympathetic. And the plot more or less follows the standard formula for a sports film; with a rise, a fall, and a comeback. Still, Hands of Stone is entertaining and even a little inspirational.

The film's well made, tho while the true story behind it is faintly inspiring, this is still another boxing drama that holds few surprises.
