Is Stephen Moyer incapable of being cast in the US without doing a 'Southron' accent?
This was my second shot at Devil’s Knot, and while it stands as a decent enough thriller on its own merits, it remains a pretty hollow, surface-level telling of the West Memphis Three story. Despite a strong cast and somber atmosphere, the film struggles to capture the sheer complexity and systemic injustice found in the actual case, opting for a condensed narrative that lacks the emotional weight of the documentaries. It effectively captures the "Satanic Panic" of the era, but ultimately feels like a missed opportunity to dive deeper into the lives of those involved, leaving the viewer with a polished but somewhat empty reenactment of a true-crime tragedy.
> "My son is eight years old! He sleeps with a night light on, he did not run away from home!" This movie highlights the bias that goes into investigations, and just sloppy work in general. I watched this when it came out and found it super interesting. 10 years later and now I have a 2 year old son. Watching some scenes hit me way harder.
While this movie did a great job showing how society and the judgments placed on people can have such devastating consequences, and highlighted how hopeless it feels to be on the other end of it, it didn't do enough to make the "real suspects" seem like they had a secret. Even if you felt like something was off, as I did, without the text at the end I never would've connected the dots to who may have actually been responsible, and I still have no earthly idea why those people would've done what they're saying they did, so it's gonna lose a few stars based simply on not doing enough to foreshadow the eventual accusation the end of the movie makes.
