I loved how this movie took aim at everyone and never shied away from its satire. At times, it had me laughing out loud; at others, it left me anxious and on edge. In many ways, I think it surpasses the more prominent A24 film released this year that tackles similar subject matter because the characters felt more authentic and true to life. This was my first time seeing Asa Butterfield in a film, and he is outstanding in this role. His character is exceptionally well written and performed, and the movie really takes off once he’s introduced. Jaeden Martell’s character isn’t quite on the same level, but the two share strong chemistry as young people from different socioeconomic backgrounds searching for emotional connection while being held back by the emotional and psychological struggles within themselves. The film isn’t without its flaws. There are some minor pacing issues, and a few scenes don’t land with the same impact as the rest. Still, this is about as indie as it gets, with a limited release from a small distributor. While it’s not a perfect film, I could easily see it becoming a cult favorite thanks to its timely subject matter and its willingness to fully commit to its bold ideas. Most of those risks pay off, making it a memorable and worthwhile watch.
