It's not as dark, or raise the same kind of complicated social issues as the first, but what it lacks in character study, it makes up for in satisfying bloody revenge action.
This one has the same dirty appeal as the other Death Wish movies, but it also drags around way too much ugly, unnecessary sexual violence just to justify Bronson doing what everyone actually came to see. Even Roger Ebert called it a “disaster by comparison” to the first movie and said it was basically a series of dumb killings, which is harsh but not exactly unfair. Bronson is still fun to watch as the architect-by-day, vigilante-by-night type, and I did like the grimy 1980s Los Angeles setting plus the idea that he wants to preserve this weird secret identity while hunting scumbags after hours. But the movie spends far too much time on exposition, sleaze, and pointless cruelty when it should have gotten to the revenge sooner and more often. The relationship with his girlfriend could have added something, but the film barely knows what to do with it. In the end, it’s not a great movie, just a grubby Bronson vehicle that delivers some vigilante satisfaction while burying it under a lot of trash.
One more. Not quite as good as the original but ok for fans of Bronson.
